Vermiglio is the westernmost municipality of the Val di Sole and is comprised of four villages: Cortina, Fraviano, Pizzano and Borgonuovo. Vermiglio is without doubt the ideal place for skiing enthusiasts to spend their holidays. The best cross-country skiing runs in the Val di Sole are at Stavél and Velon with excellent tourist routes and competition circuits. Many national and international competitions take place here. In the summer it is the ideal base for outings, hiking, Nordic walking and mountain biking, and also for relaxation on the shores of the lakes near the river Vermigliana. The historical importance of this small village, which was razed to the ground during the White War, is evidenced by its many ruins, including Fort Strino, a recently restored Austrian fortress located on the SS42 road that runs from Vermiglio to Passo Tonale.
